There’s no better way to start the day than with a stonking Morning Glory; a teetotal, morning kick-up-the-arse dance experience. This is the brilliant brainchild of Samantha Moyo who is on a “soul-shaking mission to turn clubbing upside down” and so I had to come and check it out for myself.
I am woken at 5.30am on a regular Wednesday morning. A friend throws a pair of gold sparkly leggings in my face and wraps a pink feather bower round my head. The first words I hear are “Come on. We’re going raving.”
I arrive at The Oval for 6.30am. Most people have only just shuffled into the bathroom in their novelty monster slippers, groping for their toothbrush while I am greeted by a kaleidoscopic burst of people busting out the moves and getting into the groove on the dance floor.
Everyone is smiling. Everyone is having a whale of a time. People come here to dance and tune into the uplifting positive vibes. I’m surprised to find that the hardest drug on offer is a stiff espresso or you can go all out with a very berry fruit smoothie pick-me-up. A beach ball bounces off my head and before I know it I am dancing with a fluffy croissant and cappuccino in my hand. The continental breakfast will never seem the same again.
What makes it such an up lifting experience is that it’s all-inclusive. Morning glory has her arms wide open. Anything goes. I look around. There are gorgeous blonde haired hippies, grannies, lawyers, yoga teachers, masseurs, children, winged-angels and even a collective of colourful hippy unicorns in spandex.
I meet Lisa who is dancing with her two year old son Michael.
“We absolutely love coming here. I feel safe and he absolutely adores it. I can relax, we feel welcome and we really enjoy ourselves.”
There is real energy here, a new movement is emerging looking for that natural buzz. The crazed, aggressive, 2am hyena-pack are nowhere to be seen and not a Ben Sherman in sight.
Its now 9am, you have the whole day ahead of you. It’s time to start work, take the kids to nursery or strut on down to the job centre. Whatever it is you do, you are ready to take on the world uplifted and beaming. Morning Glory, it’s long overdue and there is a genuine feeling of…er…erm….dare I say it…love in the air.
